Learning the language of Liverpool FC on the pitch and in the classroom

Every Liverpool player joining the club from overseas, or whose first language isn’t English, is faced with the additional challenge of improving their English language alongside their football. Our camps combine football and English seamlessly throughout the programme with football as a key topic in the classroom and English language spoken on the pitch.

Teaching Ethos

Players choosing Football + English follow an English curriculum based on Liverpool Football Club each afternoon.

With an emphasis on verbal communication, teachers create a vibrant and engaging classroom where students build confidence to speak the language. Using a project-based approach to learning, students apply their language skills to real-world football scenarios such as coach interviews, debating a dream team and commentating on iconic LFC matches. English teachers and football coaches work closely together to ensure that what is learnt in the classroom complements what is learnt on the pitch.

How it Works

Before camp, an online test is taken to assess students' vocabulary and grammar. On arrival, teachers speak to each student to assess their level and place them in the right class.  English is spoken throughout the camp to create a unique, immersive setting. At the end of each week, teachers complete English progress reports for each student along with some advice on how to improve their English at home.

Teaching Team

Our dedicated and highly qualified English teachers create a positive and energetic learning environment. The teaching team is led by our Director of Studies, qualified to manage the curriculum and responsible for maintaining high standards in every classroom. Our teachers have post-graduate teaching qualifications and usually work full-time in an education setting. They also undergo extra training and professional development under the supervision of the Director of Studies, who oversees student testing, reporting, and dealing with any issues that may arise. Residing on camp with the players, coaches and welfare team, the teaching staff are involved in all aspects of camp life.

Our English teachers and football coaches work closely together to ensure the English and football sessions complement each other. As well as speaking English on the pitch and in the classroom, our welfare team support classroom learning objectives in recreational activity sessions and throughout downtime on camp.
